  • Mission Statement

It is the mission of the Religious Education Department of St. Mary and St. Juan Diego Catholic Church to assist and support our parents in the formation of their children in their catholic faith. We are committed to instill an abiding love of God and one another and share the fullness of our faith through the doctrines and traditions that is has to offer.

  • Parents

We acknowledge parents as the primary people in their child's faith formation. Our hope is to work with and guide parents as needed through our Religious Education Program.

Our curriculum includes Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, liturgy, lives of the saints, Catholic customs and practices. Through these things we hope to provide the tools for the children in our program to know, love and live their faith and grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ.

We welcome children just beginning their faith journey as well as those who have already received their sacraments of initiation. We realize the needs of the children in our faith community vary and we do our best to meet those needs.

  • Sacraments

In the Diocese of Phoenix, the guidelines for receiving sacraments are:

    • Reconciliation (Confession) - Second Grade or above
    • First Holy Communion - Third Grade or above
    • Confirmation - Third Grade or above
    • R.C.I.C. - 7 yrs or older; not baptized

    Faith Formation

R.E. Classes at St. Mary Catholic Church/St. Juan Diego Catholic Church

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori based method of Religious Education which creates a “hands on” environment called an “atrium” in which children can hear, think about and celebrate the important Mysteries of the Catholic faith as made known  in Liturgy and Scripture. CGS Sessions are offered for children in Preschool-First Grade and for children in second-fourth grade in need of sacrament preparation.  (CGS only held at St. Mary’s)

    PreK – Level 1 – Wed. 9:15 – 10:45 am

    Kindergarten – Level 1 – Tues. 4:30 – 6PM

    First Grade – Level 2 – Wed. 4:30-6PM

    2nd Grade – Reconciliation – Thur. 4:30 – 6PM

    3rd Grade – Confirmation/Eucharist – Thur. 4:30 – 6PM

Kindergarten – We use Stories of God’s Love for our kindergartners. Young children will participate in a religion program that helps them through the use of Scripture stories, prayer and activities as they begin their faith journey.

First – Sixth Grade We use Be My Disciples and Our Catholic Faith, which leads children to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ as they form habits of discipleship and learn to choose life in Christ.

    • Class times:

    St. Mary’s:  Mon. – 5-6:15pm & Tues. 6-7:15pm.

    St. Juan Diego – Wed. 4:30 – 5:45pm & 6:15 – 7:30pm.

    Sacrament Preparation –

Children in 2nd grade or above that are not baptized would attend our RCIC Program – This is a 2 year program.  This process helps the child to develop a relationship with Jesus Christ as they are introduced to Scripture, the Sacraments, Prayers, Church Doctrine and Sacred Tradition.

First Confession/Reconciliation – For baptized children in 2nd Grade or above.  They gain an understanding of God’s unconditional love and mercy as they grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ through Scripture, Church teachings, prayer and the opportunity to confess their sins to a priest.

Confirmation – For children in 3rd grade or above.  This is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation.  The Sacrament of Confirmation allows us to share in the mission of the church as we celebrate being filled with the Holy Spirit.  Each child sealed with chrism oil receives a permanent character drawing them closer to Christ.  It gives them the strength to spread Christ’s message to others.

Eucharist (Holy Communion) – For children in 3rd grade or above who have already received the Sacraments of Baptism and Confession.  This sacrament, when received for the very first time fulfills the journey of initiation into the Catholic Church.  This is the initial nourishment for the continuing faith journey of the child. In the Diocese of Phoenix the children receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist during the same Mass.
